11/1/56 9:48:24 AM Opening ╥Skating Log 06/02/94╙ for recording.
Sita895661 : hi LeeAnn!
LeeAnn 1 : Hi Sita!
LeeAnn 1 : How are you doing?
Sita895661 : pretty good, and you?
LeeAnn 1 : Hi Faxel!
Sita895661 : hi Faxel!
LeeAnn 1 : Not bad, thanks.
Faxel 1 : Hi leeAnn, Sita. How are things?
LeeAnn 1 : Tonight's topic is figure skating coverage by the
media. Do you all have any suggestions for questions
LeeAnn 1 : and stuff?
LeeAnn 1 : Should I take that as a no?
JL Pooley : Hi folks
Sita895661 : Hi Janet!
LeeAnn 1 : Hi Janet! How are you doing?
Faxel 1 : Ooops! I forgot that was tonight's topic. I'm trying
to think fast now!
LeeAnn 1 : Have you completed your tour?
JL Pooley : I am in Florida and it has RAINED every day,
boooooooooo
LeeAnn 1 : How did you get online? Parent's computer?
JL Pooley : Got one more tour stop, LeeAnn -- unless I add
another, of course! :)
LeeAnn 1 : Sorry to hear about the rain.
LeeAnn 1 : Anything new on the tour?
JL Pooley : Borrowed a computer from work -- can't go to the
beach so I've been playing on AOL.
JL Pooley : I got bad news LeeAnn -- Prince Brian's been out.
LeeAnn 1 : I've heard that. I know he was scheduled not to be on
some tour spots, but supposedly he's hurt his
LeeAnn 1 : knee or something?
Sita895661 : No Brian? Bummer..I'm going next week!
Faxel 1 : Is he out for the tour?
JL Pooley : I overheard somebody in Greensboro say that SHE'D
heard he'd hurt his knee in practice.
Sita895661 : but I see Elvis is back!
JL Pooley : I'm going again Sunday, Sita, I'll let you know if
he's there.
JL Pooley : Hi Laura!
LauraP1808 : Hi All
JL Pooley : He'll come back if he's healthy, Faxel.
Sita895661 : hi Laura!
LauraP1808 : Where's Brenda?
Faxel 1 : Will you believe I won't see the tour till July? Oh
well, at least I'll see them on my birthday :)
Pattern99 : Hi all.
LauraP1808 : Hi
JL Pooley : Hi Pattern
LeeAnn 1 : Hi Laura and pattern 99
JL Pooley : Dunno where Brenda is, Laura. Is she hosting?
LauraP1808 : No LeeAnn is I thought
LeeAnn 1 : He's scheduled not to perforum between May 22 and
June 2.
Sita895661 : who, Brian?
LeeAnn 1 : NOpe, I am. We should get started now. I was just
waiting for people to show.
Faxel 1 : That doesn't sound like an injury, in that case!
JL Pooley : Oh, good, that means he'll be there on Sunday. I hope
I get the chair encore....
LeeAnn 1 : My system is very slow tonight, so I'm sorry if my
comments are coming late.
Sita895661 : OK!
LeeAnn 1 : Yes, Brian.
JL Pooley : Yeah, I don't know if what I overheard is correct or
not, Faxel.
LeeAnn 1 : Faxel - it's a rest for him built into the touring
schedule.
Faxel 1 : Have you guys heard Oksana and Victor have changed
agents?
LauraP1808 : Yes
LeeAnn 1 : Because of his injuries. Let us know if he shows,
Janet.
LauraP1808 : Originally it seemed everyone had that agent
JL Pooley : Hey LeeAnn, when's the closing date for the tour
again? I don't have my list here.
LeeAnn 1 : Okay, since tonight's topic is skating
journalism/media coverage, I thought we'd start out
Pattern99 : No, who is the new agent?
LauraP1808 : Anyone see Skating Magazine this week?
LauraP1808 : Journalistically speaking THEY ARE SO SLOW IN
REPORTING THINGS
JL Pooley : No Laura, mine's probably in my mailbox.
Faxel 1 : Rosenberg, you mean? I can't think of the name of hte
new agent right now. Apparently Oksana almost
LeeAnn 1 : with the skating magazines out there. What's the
difference between them, which ones are good, etc...
Sita895661 : Recent articles: the Oksana story in Life and the
article in Ms.
LeeAnn 1 : Julye 12
Faxel 1 : had a six-figure deal worked out when they were
forced to change agents.
JL Pooley : Thanks LeeAnn
LauraP1808 : Personally, I think Skating is the worst Lee Ann
JL Pooley : Forced by whom, Faxel? Ukraine?
LeeAnn 1 : Guys - I'm just testing to see how long it takes for
this to post. It's exacting 10:09 on my watch now
JL Pooley : Maybe you should sign off and sign on again, LeeAnn.
Sounds like you have a slow node.
Faxel 1 : Sounds like some Ukrainian officials, or possibly
Galina. I think this is a terrible decision for them
LeeAnn 1 : That took two minutes. I have to sign off and on
again. I'm sorry. I'll be right back.
LeeAnn 1 : Hi, Sorry about that.
Faxel 1 : IMG is still bigger.
JL Pooley : Last year Viktor performed quite a bit in Las Vegas,
not on a tour at all.
JL Pooley : Welcome back LeeAnn. Is that better?
LauraP1808 : True
Sita895661 : If they switch for IMG, then is no worse, but I hear
the Ukrainian FSA wanted to manage them..
LeeAnn 1 : Yes, it's coming up right away, now.
Faxel 1 : That's true. I tend to forget about shows I can't
see.
LauraP1808 : How will they manage them in SImsbury,
Connecticut?[g]
Pattern99 : Rosenberg is going to put together his own tour next
year.
Faxel 1 : I'm sure they won't switch to IMG.
JL Pooley : Oh, there's a Ukrainian embassy there Laura, didn't
you know? [g]
Faxel 1 : Rosenberg has had his own tour for a few years.
LauraP1808 : Why, yes, I've toured it before
JL Pooley : I guess we should let LeeAnn take over now that shes
back......
LeeAnn 1 : Okay, getting back to the topic.... What do you all
think of the skating magazines?
LeeAnn 1 : Thanks, Janet.
JL Pooley : I wish they were more readily available.
LauraP1808 : Well, I said previously that I thought Skating was
the worst
LeeAnn 1 : Faxel, I think it was you who said Skating isn't very
good. I'd agree. They don't really have any
LeeAnn 1 : aritcles.
JL Pooley : Keeping up with my subscriptions is tough.
Faxel 1 : ABout magazines -- depends what you're interested in.
Pictures? Editorial pages? Competitions?
LeeAnn 1 : Oops, Sorry, Laura. It was you who said it.
Faxel 1 : They all have their strengths and weaknesses.
Sita895661 : As a person who doesn't subscribe, I wish I could
find them in a book store or library..
LauraP1808 : Blades and Patinage has the best pictures IMHO
JL Pooley : Skating also looks rather hideous, now, since they
redesigned it.
Sita895661 : easily...
Faxel 1 : Skating now looks more like a kids magazine. It is a
kids magazine.
LeeAnn 1 : I don't think I've ever seen one on a newstand
JL Pooley : Patinage is devine....
LauraP1808 : ]This month they tried harder I think
Pattern99 : I like Skaters Edge.
LeeAnn 1 : You like the smaller version, Janet?
Faxel 1 : Blades is going on the newsstand in July.
LeeAnn 1 : I bought Patinage once, but it was all in French, the
didn't send me the englich copy.
Faxel 1 : I understand Elvis will be on the cover.
JL Pooley : I thought the smaller version was much easier to read
and slightly more intelligent.
LauraP1808 : IDo you mean the newsletter from Delaware, Pattern?
LeeAnn 1 : What's the Skater's Edge.
LeeAnn 1 : I'd agree, Janet.
JL Pooley : They have this thing now about using BLURRY
photographs in a faux-artsy manner.
JL Pooley : Skater's edge is definitely the one for technical
stuff.
Faxel 1 : The content of Patinage stinks, but it looks very
professional.
LeeAnn 1 : They like collages too much, too.
JL Pooley : It's also beautifully laid=out -- take THAT, skating!
LauraP1808 : I wish they'd expand Skater's Edge, but I don't know
if they have the $$
Pattern99 : Skaters Edge is published in Kensington MD by Alice
Berman
LeeAnn 1 : Guys, what is Skater's Edge?
LauraP1808 : I thought it was the one that Luddy was part of
LeeAnn 1 : Hi HL!
Sita895661 : I think its a new mag, LeeAnn.
HLSmith1 : hello!
Faxel 1 : It's newsletter.
JL Pooley : It's a newsletter-format mag that contains primarily
articles about technique, LeeAnn.
LeeAnn 1 : Is it very good? Does it have photos, or just
articles?
LeeAnn 1 : Ah, thanks.
JL Pooley : It has articles and drawings.
LauraP1808 : No real pictures
LeeAnn 1 : Have any of you read the FRS magazine?
JL Pooley : Well-done drawings.
JL Pooley : FRS?
Faxel 1 : FRS?
LeeAnn 1 : I may have the initials wrong. The new figure skating
one.
JL Pooley : IFS.
JL Pooley : I sent them a check, but haven't gotten anything yet.
I have to call when I get home.
LeeAnn 1 : That's it, Janet.
JL Pooley : International Figure Skating
LauraP1808 : That's the one that supposedly you can buy in
bookstores etc.
Sita895661 : Well, I don't see it..
JL Pooley : "Supposedly" seems to be the right word, so far.
LeeAnn 1 : I have yet to see a copy, though. From what I've
heard, it is pretty good.
LeeAnn 1 : Hi Brenda.
BrendaW660 : Hi, all, sorry I'm late.
JL Pooley : Hi Brenda!!
LeeAnn 1 : Linda forwarded everyone an article from their
premiere issue.
Faxel 1 : I don't think it's on the newsstand. But Blades on
Ice will be.
LauraP1808 : That's another one that comes out of Massachusetts
LeeAnn 1 : It was about judging and the future of skaitng,
remember?
BrendaW660 : Int'l Figure Skating will be too.
JL Pooley : at this point I'm worried about the future of IFS and
my check!
LauraP1808 : I haven't seen it, but why is it considered
"industry-related"?
Faxel 1 : That's strange, since it's not the type of
publication a general audience would be interested
in
LeeAnn 1 : I don't know Laura. I haven't seen it, but I was
wondering that myself.
LauraP1808 : Did you subscribe to it already Faxel?
LeeAnn 1 : Janet, teh next issue is supposed to be out soon. If
you don't get the next one, call them up.
Faxel 1 : It has coverage of the people behing the stars, for
the most part.
Faxel 1 : Although it did have a piece on Elaine Zayak.
LauraP1808 : Who is behind the stars Faxel?
JL Pooley : I'll read anything, Faxel.
LauraP1808 : This months Skating has an article on Elaine too
LeeAnn 1 : How many do you subscribe to, Janet?
JL Pooley : I'M behind the stars, Laura! [g] I certainly buy
enough tickets!!
Faxel 1 : I'm sure you will, and so will I! But I don't know
about most people out there.
JL Pooley : Patinage, Skating, ASW, Tracings
LauraP1808 : Brenda, Janet deserves AT LEAST one article
LeeAnn 1 : Not bad. :D
Sita895661 : Brenda's bumped..
LeeAnn 1 : What are ASW and Tracing's like?
JL Pooley : The problem is, I've got them all coming due at the
same time! Big mistake...
LeeAnn 1 : That is Tracings.
LauraP1808 : I get Skater's Edge and the Parent's newsletter,
which is TERRIBLE
JL Pooley : ASW has, mostly, pretty good writing. Good updates on
tours.
LeeAnn 1 : Hello Puther.
JL Pooley : Tracings also has good writing, HORRIBLE layout.
Puther : hi
Faxel 1 : Tracings isn't bad but looks so unprofessional it's
painful. ASW has pretty good articles, but it's
LauraP1808 : I like Tracings, I've always gotten that. I feel
OBLIGATED to keep it
Faxel 1 : printed on newspaper-type paper, so the photos don't
look too hot.
JL Pooley : Hi again, Brenda.
LauraP1808 : because of the Clarke's
JL Pooley : Oh, and Blades. I forgot I also get Blades.
Faxel 1 : I like Tracings, too. I just don't understand whythe
Clarkes won't buy a decent computer.
JL Pooley : And then there's the Lenzi Foundation newsletter,
which I think LOOKS just gorgeous.... [g]
Faxel 1 : It's so easy to do good layouts nowadays.
LauraP1808 : I will ask them onme of these days
LeeAnn 1 : I've been thinking of getting another magazine. I
just got Blades, but maybe ASW will be good also.
Faxel 1 : I've been on their case for a while. Sigh.
JL Pooley : I wrote the Clarkes' a letter about that Laura, but
they ignored me...
LauraP1808 : That doesn' t sound like them
LeeAnn 1 : Lenzi foundation is gorgeous. They must have highly
taletned people working for them. :) And the
LauraP1808 : and it's not as if Ted doesn't have experience in
publishing etc.
LeeAnn 1 : insight into their dance aritcles is astounding. :)
JL Pooley : Well, they responded to my letter, but made no
changes. They won't even spell-check.
Faxel 1 : IF he does,it doesn't show in e format.
JL Pooley : I really miss Frank Loeser Nowasad's Dance articles!!
Faxel 1 : the format, I mean.
BrendaW660 : geez I'm having trouble with AOL tonight!
Pattern99 : Brendas not having any luck tonite.
JL Pooley : Thank you LeeAnn! [bowing]
LauraP1808 : It is a home publication basically, and for that it
isn't bad I suppose
LeeAnn 1 : Glad you're back, Brenda. You're welcome, Janet.
BrendaW660 : Which one?
JL Pooley : Oh, it's a great mag, Laura, but so hard to read!
LauraP1808 : Tracings
JL Pooley : Tracings, Brenda.
Faxel 1 : By the way, the Lenzi foundation also has a phone
hotline. It's great for info during competitions.
BrendaW660 : Oh ...yes, my favorite <g>
JL Pooley : You wanna invite people to read, not turn them away
by looking like a legal brief.
LauraP1808 : I thought it was disconnected for awhile
BrendaW660 : I wasn't being fecetious (didn't want that <g> to be
misinterpreted)
JL Pooley : It took a hiatus, Laura. I think it comes back this
month.
JL Pooley : Newsletter too a hiatus, too.
JL Pooley : took, I mean
LauraP1808 : I like ASW, but hate the newsprint
BrendaW660 : me too
JL Pooley : ASW is easy to fold up and carry in my purse, though.
[g]
LeeAnn 1 : What do you all think of local coverage? If weren't
for the whole Nancy/Tonya hype, we'd hardly ever
BrendaW660 : Good point, Janet
LeeAnn 1 : have an skating aritcle here. With the exception of
the John Powers Olympics column.
BrendaW660 : Well, it's at least put skating in the papers here
... it got zero coverage before
LauraP1808 : LeeAnn, you'd enjoy Tracings for that because it
still covers our area even though it
JL Pooley : The Washington Post virtually ignores Michael Weiss,
and he's the Junior World Champion.
LauraP1808 : branched out big time a couple of years ago
LeeAnn 1 : We did get results to competitions sometimes, but
that is it. Just alisting.
LeeAnn 1 : Laura - is it Tracings or ASW that is on newsprint?
Faxel 1 : Sports editors just don't want to believe skating is
popular. They're too set in their ways.
LauraP1808 : ASW
JL Pooley : ASW, LeeAnn
LeeAnn 1 : Is Tracing the one that is poorly done?
Pattern99 : The Post had five lines about Michael going to the
Goodwill Games.
LauraP1808 : Skating did report the break up of J. Paul Binnebose
and Sara Ward and
BrendaW660 : I'm surprised they mentioned it at all this early.
LeeAnn 1 : You'd think someone for the post would take a bit of
notice on Michael Weiss.
JL Pooley : Perhaps they're finally waking up.
LauraP1808 : Laura Murphy and Brian Wells
Sita895661 : The Chicago Tribune usually does a decent job..
LeeAnn 1 : Oh, I did read in my paper today that Elizabeth
Punsalen's brother was declard mentally incompetent
LeeAnn 1 : for trial.
JL Pooley : so tired of couples breaking up....
LauraP1808 : Yes, he thinks he's Jesus
JL Pooley : Since when did Jesus stab people with a knife? Geez,
he's sick.
LauraP1808 : Interesting to note that J. Paul's new partner is
Jacqui Davidson
JL Pooley : Jacqui Davidson? I don't know her.
LauraP1808 : He thought his father was the devil. Jacki is JOHN's
daughter
JL Pooley : Ohhhhhhhh.....
LauraP1808 : You're probably all too young to know him
JL Pooley : Nahhhhhhh....
Faxel 1 : Chatty group we are tonight, eh?
LauraP1808 : I'm trying my best to stay on topic[g]
HLSmith1 : Yes
Sita895661 : What do you all think about the Life article on
Oksana?
BrendaW660 : Who thougth his father was the devil?
JL Pooley : Waiting for LeeAnn to drag us back on topic....
LeeAnn 1 : Okay, what do you all think of online services as a
medium? We certainly do cover the sport -- in a
LeeAnn 1 : way.
JL Pooley : Ricky Punsalan, Brenda
LauraP1808 : I would like to read it, but not yet
BrendaW660 : ah ...
LeeAnn 1 : There you go, Janet. :D
JL Pooley : I hate Life articles. They're far too short!
LauraP1808 : nobody could find it for me
BrendaW660 : And Life turned the Protopopovs down!
JL Pooley : Online services are a GODSEND for skating fans...
BrendaW660 : I think so too Janet
JL Pooley : You want my copy, Laura? I'm done with it.
LauraP1808 : Can you copy it?
LeeAnn 1 : We can more information at a faster rate than
publicatins.
BrendaW660 : Especially when you are in a skating-deprived state
like mine.
JL Pooley : I would NEVER hear some stuff otherwise.
LauraP1808 : You don't have to send me the original, but I'd like
to read it
HLSmith1 : i havent read life yet but i will,im a big oksana fan
Sita895661 : And the internet is a good source..
LauraP1808 : HI CONNIE!
BrendaW660 : Hi, Connie
LeeAnn 1 : There is a huge poole of people on the internet
system.
JL Pooley : Hi Connie!!!
LeeAnn 1 : Hi Connie.
CKSutcliff : Hi Y'all!
LeeAnn 1 : Hello Bafalomew.
BrendaW660 : But you know, it can get overwhelming. Our AOL group
is manageable to read messages,
BrendaW660 : etc, but adding the Internet adds major volume.
JL Pooley : Yeah, with the Internet you get people in Canada,
England, Australia, etc.
BrendaW660 : But it does add a dimension to the discussion having
the other nations ...
Faxel 1 : WIth Internet, is there any way to get to the end of
the list of messages for the skating newsgroup?
LeeAnn 1 : On the internet board, you really have to pick the
topics you want to read about. There is a LOT of
LeeAnn 1 : volumen.
LauraP1808 : I still can't GET to Internet
Pattern99 : Neither can I.
Sita895661 : use keyword INTERNET
Faxel 1 : It takes hours, literally to get to the current
messages. Any suggestions?
HLSmith1 : How do you get there
JL Pooley : I get on the Internet through Delphi, because AOL's
access is too clumsy.
LeeAnn 1 : Faxel - go much more frequently. There about 100
messages every day. If you don't keep up, it is
LeeAnn 1 : overwhelming.
LeeAnn 1 : Hi Julie!
JL Pooley : Hi Julie!
Sita895661 : Faxel, next time you read, use "update all as read",
that way its cleared..
CKSutcliff : Internet has sure been getting alot of news attention
lately.
HLSmith1 : hi julie
CKSutcliff : Hi Julie
Faxel 1 : But what do you do the first time? Spend half a day
getting to the end of the list?
JulieD3964 : Hello everyone
Pattern99 : I'v tried INTERNET but the old Apple won't pick it
up.
Pattern99 : Hi Julie
Sita895661 : Well, yeah..first time is a bummer..
JulieD3964 : Hi Mike!
LeeAnn 1 : Faxel - Yes, you have to. Or you can just skip over
them and update them as being read.
Sita895661 : Hi Julie..
Faxel 1 : Oh well, such is life. . . Thanks!
LauraP1808 : I have Prodigy too and they now have live chat too.
LeeAnn 1 : Are any of you on the internet mailing list? I know
you are, Janet.
JL Pooley : Do they? I may have to try them again. I hate
missing possible information! [g]
Faxel 1 : I tried Prodigy during the Olympics (before
discovering AOL) and I HATED it. Terribly clumsy
Sita895661 : For internet, I like access through Delphi, like
Janet..
Faxel 1 : and slow.
JL Pooley : Yeah, there's so much text on the Internet that using
a program with lots of graphics is slooooooww.
Pattern99 : Slower than this?
LeeAnn 1 : Faxel, do you have a Mac?
LauraP1808 : I find it faster than here, but maybe it's the 9600
Faxel 1 : Yup!
JL Pooley : It's also called "Plodigy," Faxel. [g]
Faxel 1 : It figures :)
LeeAnn 1 : That's why. It's IBM based so we who have macs also
have problems on Prodigy.
LeeAnn 1 : Janet, how is Delphi internet different?
LauraP1808 : I dont understand computer stuff as you know but *P*
is MUCH faster for me
LauraP1808 : is it because I have an IBM?
JL Pooley : Well, it's entirely text-based, LeeAnn. Remember how
I showed you CompuServe? It's like that.
JL Pooley : Yes, Laura, it is. The people who wrote the Plodigy
software must hate macs.
LeeAnn 1 : I think so, Laura. It is bout 3-4 times slower on
Prodigy for me (Mac user).
JL Pooley : Plus, don't you use 9600 baud, Laura?
LauraP1808 : Yes
LeeAnn 1 : That was faster, Janet.
LauraP1808 : whatever that is[g]
JL Pooley : That also helps.
JL Pooley : It just means the stuff goes over the phone lines
mucho faster....
LeeAnn 1 : Hello Ubiquino.
Ubiquino : Hi LeeAnn.
Ubiquino : Does anyone know where I can find a Red Sox schedule
on AOL?
LauraP1808 : Julie, you have to visit me soon and give me an in
person computer lesson
JL Pooley : Did Brenda get punted again?
Sita895661 : sorry to go out of topic, but they're rerunning the
Kurt documentary and darn it, its kinda different!
JL Pooley : I think they're in the library, Ubiquino.
LauraP1808 : I think I have one on my refridgerator
LeeAnn 1 : If you all want, we can upen this up to a free forum
for the last fifteen minutes.
JL Pooley : Different? How?
Ubiquino : which library?
JL Pooley : The baseball library.
Sita895661 : There's some stuff added about Kurt's comeback..
Sita895661 : after his injury..
LeeAnn 1 : The AOL library.
Ubiquino : thanks
LeeAnn 1 : What did they add about it?
JL Pooley : I figured they've have a few more shots of Viktor
skating to The Bells again.... [g]
LeeAnn 1 : Oh, by the way, have any of you heard of Outside
Edge?
Sita895661 : Well, you remember the part when Kurt started skating
again..
LauraP1808 : Sorry, Ubiquino it's a 1993 schedule and it's a
magnet
JL Pooley : Yahhh, da da da DAH, da da dahhhhhhhhhh......
Faxel 1 : You mean Boitano's newsletter.
JL Pooley : No, I haven't LeeAnn, what is it?
JL Pooley : Oh, wait, didn't somebody post from that once?
LeeAnn 1 : Yep. But I've heard that it isn't just him, but about
a 30 page newsletter of currently published
LeeAnn 1 : news articles. Not exactly Boitano's newsletter. It's
separate from that, but it was started by a
LeeAnn 1 : fan or group of his fans.
Faxel 1 : That's what I meant. Sorry.
LeeAnn 1 : Hello Ale Divin.
JL Pooley : There's a lotta newsletters out there these days....
Sita895661 : Ever check out Brian Orser's newsletter..
Faxel 1 : If we get into newsletters, there are lots of
fanzines out there.
JL Pooley :
